Reflect upon the case studies, choose one, and answer the questions to address the following.
Case Study One
Persons with Type II diabetes have long-term effects that are greatly underestimated because the patients may not follow recommended treatments. A randomized control trial was done to identify if an intervention group adhered to taking medications versus the control group. There were 40 participants in each group. The research data from the two groups is parametric data and is not normally distributed, and the researcher is using a student t-test to measure the differences between the two groups.

Case Study 1
Justification for the Use of the Student t-Test
The Student t-test is an appropriate statistical method used to compare the means of two independent groups, such as the intervention and control groups this randomized controlled trial (RCT) (Gerald & Patson, 2021). T-test assumes that data are normally distributed, the variances are equal, and the observations are independent (Hu & Plonsky, 2021). However, in this study, the data are parametric but not normally distributed, violating one of the normality assumption. A non-parametric alternative, such as the Mann-Whitney U test, would be more appropriate to use. It would also be advisable to conduct normality tests such as the Shapiro-Wilk test to confirm whether the assumption holds before using the t-test (Gerald & Patson, 2021).
Expected Results for Statistical Significance
Statistical significance is typically determined using a p-value threshold (e.g. p < 0.05). If the p-value falls below this threshold, it would mean that the difference in medication adherence between the intervention and control groups is unlikely due to chance (Imbens, 2021).
