Learning about the history of research ethics reinforced my knowledge of the importance of protecting human subjects in biomedical research. Cases like the Tuskegee Syphilis Study and the Nuremberg Code violations stress the consequences of inadequate ethical oversight and informed consent (Spellecy & Busse, 2021). For my PICOT question, “In postoperative adult surgical patients (Population), what is the effect of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols (Intervention) in comparison to standard opioid-centered pain management (Comparison) on postoperative pain levels (Outcomes) within the first 30 days post-surgery (Time)?”, the studies I reviewed adhered to robust ethical practices. For instance, Chiewhatpong et al. (2022) conducted a randomized controlled trial with pre-study ethics committee approval and ensured informed consent from all participants.
