Reflecting on my learning experience in this course, several key concepts have profoundly impacted my understanding and future practice as a master’s (MSN)-prepared nurse practitioner.  The course has been resourceful in expanding my skills and preparation for my future role as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN), especially in fostering a culture of safety, continuous learning, and advocacy for patient-centered care.

Key Concepts

The key concepts that stood out include the role of advanced practice nurses (APNs) in safety and quality improvement. Through the course, I explored several quality and safety issues such as hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), medication and diagnostic errors, patient falls, and patient satisfaction. Through these, I developed a better understanding of the roles of APNs in preventing safety risks through evidence-based practices, staff education, and patient advocacy. I also learned about the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) which enhanced my understanding of the role of financial incentives in driving quality improvement (QI) initiatives in clinical settings. The link between performance metrics and patient outcomes stresses the necessity for APNs to be proactive in quality measurement and improvement efforts. I will apply these concepts in my future practice by advocating for high-quality and safe care through initiatives such as infection control programs.
