During the past four weeks, you have examined conditions affecting the immune, hematologic, cardiovascular, pulmonary, and renal systems. Some conditions can affect all of these conditions, including autoimmune disorders like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that cause inflammation in multiple body systems. Follow the steps below to analyze the effects of SLE on various body systems.

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that significantly affects the cardiovascular system through various pathophysiological mechanisms. As explained by Frostegård 2023), autoantibodies, such as anti-dsDNA and antiphospholipid antibodies, form immune complexes that deposit in cardiac tissues and blood vessels, triggering inflammation and complement activation. This process can result in vasculitis, endothelial damage, and accelerated atherosclerosis. SLE also increases the risk of nonbacterial endocarditis, particularly Libman-Sacks endocarditis, which affects the heart valves. Moreover, inflammation of the pericardium and myocardium may lead to pericarditis, myocarditis, and impaired cardiac function.
Clinically, cardiovascular involvement in SLE can present as chest pain from pericarditis, shortness of breath, fatigue, arrhythmias, and even heart failure. Patients may experience angina or myocardial infarction at a younger age due to accelerated coronary artery disease (Jha et al., 2022).
