NR584NP Week 2 Discussion Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS)

Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the discussion. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.

General Instructions

This week, you will discuss how the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) impacts quality and safety.

Include the following sections:

  1. Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
    • Describe one practice area in which MIPS could be used to improve the quality of care related to your anticipated FUTURE PRACTICE setting. Do not discuss your current practice setting.
    • Discuss two ways MIPS could positively impact the practice area.
    • Describe the role of MIPS in supporting the financial viability of healthcare providers and organizations and client health outcomes.
    • Examine how advanced practice nurses can contribute to the development and refinement of MIPS quality measures to ensure that they are valid, reliable, and meaningful for clients and providers.
  1. Integration of Evidence: Integrate relevant scholarly sources as defined by program expectationsLinks to an external site.:
    • Cite a scholarly source in the initial post.
    • Cite a scholarly source in one faculty response post.
    • Cite a scholarly source in one peer post.
    • Accurately analyze, synthesize, and/or apply principles from evidence with no more than one short quote (15 words or less) for the week.
    • Include a minimum of two different scholarly sources per week. Cite all references and provide references for all citations.

Future Practice Setting to Use MIPS

The Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) is one way to participate in Quality Payment Program (QPP) a federal program in which Medicare providers are reimbursed based on patient care quality and outcomes (QPP, n.d). The performance categories of MIPS include quality, promotion of interoperability, cost, and practice improvement activities (QPP, n.d). In my future practice as an advanced practice nurse (APRN) specializing in family nursing practice (FNP), MIPS could help to improve the quality of care for patients across the lifespan, especially those with multiple comorbidities.

Ways MIPS Could Positively Impact the Practice Area

One way MIPS could impact patient care in FNP is by incentivizing practices to monitor and improve metrics such as fall risk assessments, medication adherence and management, chronic disease management, readmission reduction, etc. (Bond et al., 2022). For instance, it would ensure effective use of health information technologies to improve care quality and outcomes (e.g. telemonitoring for heart failure patients to reduce readmission, morbidity, and mortality, mobile health applications to enhance medication adherence, etc.). The second way MIPS would impact patient care is by promoting and encouraging the adoption of evidence-based guidelines by rewarding (financial incentives) providers who adhere to best practices and demonstrate…………….Click on the PayPal icon below to purchase full solution for $5
