With the high rates of disasters, both human-caused and natural, there is a need for disaster preparedness in hospital operations to ensure effective response to emergencies while maintaining patient safety and care continuity (Al Thobaity, 2024). In my current workplace, we have a well-structured emergency department plan that includes incident command systems (ICS), communication protocols, evacuation procedures, logistics, and resource management. We have also partnered with external agencies such as emergency medical services, fire departments, and public health organizations. However, we need to improve on resource limitations, staffing challenges, and inadequate staff training. We need to invest in stockpiling more critical supplies (such as personal protective equipment (PPEs), medications, ventilators, and backup power sources), establish stronger supply chain partnerships, and develop contingency plans for resource allocation in times of crisis. This will have us prepared for even prolonged emergencies.
